Depict Evaluation

The task was to create a short 90 second film for DepicT. It challenges filmmakers on any budget from anywhere in the world to show their stuff in just a minute and a half.

When it came to our camera work, we tried to put it in a various selection of angles and shots. From a long shot to a POV. I think what we did positively is the fact we flipped one of our camera shots and it worked very well. No one even realized that we had done it.

Another thing we did well is used a tripod as much as we could so the shots were very stabelised where they needed to be. One thing that could of been improved is the continuity, there were a few things likes shirt changes etc.

With mise en scene i think we did well with costume apart from the end where I had a shirt change. I couldn't really do much as we didn't have much time left to film at all. We tried our best to make the costume scary. We had to use what we could from the college and it turned out a lot better than we thought. I think our idea for the setting went very well. It is very stereotypical within the fact that it's in a small corridor and a small office. I think the small space really shows you can't really go anywhere and it increases fear. I think our props were not the best; however, they didn't look the worse. In a way I think they looked quite good. With the lighting we tried as hard as we could to make it dark for effect but unfortunately were filming within daytime so it was difficult. It didn't turn out too bad though due to the black and white edit.

Editing and continuity I think for our first piece of work went very well. As you can see from the clip, we used the black and white and then chose our 'leaf colour' as red from the 'colour picker tool'. this looked very good and turned out very well for our first attempt. The colour red is represented with danger, this is why we chose red out of all the colours that could of been chosen. The black and white also added to the dramatic effect of the clip. Continuity went rather well between scenes, you couldn't really tell that we filmed the whole thing within 6 days.

Sound went good with the movie. We used a violin sample, a jump scare sound and a sample of music at the end for the credits. All together it worked very well together.

All in all I think the whole clip for a first piece of work was a success and i was incredibly happy with how it turned out. i think Lucy (Main roll) did a great job of acting. Acting in a horror film is really not the easiest thing in the world and I think she did a really good job. Also I ust give thanks to Ben for the excellent camera work as well as he also did a great job.
