Section 1
Our task for this assignment was to re-brand a Unilever product. Our product that we chose to re-brand was Lynx. It was aimed at 13-18 year old aspirers who are looking for friends/partners.
Before I was placed in my group I originally chose. So choosing this as our product made it very easy to chose and made it very easy to work with.
We aimed to target this towards 18-25 year old aspirers who are looking for a better life and being comfortable with there life. We used Tom Ford private blend as our inspiration for our unisex Lynx fragrance. We thought it was a very good and different idea which is why we created our own.
Section 2
To get feedback for our advert of our target audience we created a survey on Surveymonkey. We also did screen showing to all the peers within our class. We played the advert on the projector and the class sat round the tables, we all watched the advert and they gave us feedback on which we could of improved on and what they enjoyed about the advert. We collected a list of what people said we could of improved on and one of the major things they pointed out was that there was no soundtrack or voice-over. This is due to the lack of team work and co-operation within the group and we didn't manage to get it done. Another thing was that you couldn't quite see the Lynx bottle drop in one of the scenes. This was due to the continuity error we made so we had to work with what we had and make it look as good as possible. One thing that a peers thought we did well was the range of shots and how smooth our camera movements were. This was thanks to all of our group as at one point we all filmed at least a couple of scenes. They also liked the colour scheme of our bottle. We asked around and what people thought looked most classy was black and silver or black and gold. So in the end we chose black and silver; our peers really liked the look of this. One last thing they liked was the duration of our advert. they thought it was long enough but not so long that it dragged and got boring.
I think we got the message of our advert across very well and people understood what the product was. I think it would have a very good impact on them. We tried to stick11 to the pre-production work as much as we could so that the message would be as clear as possible. If the viewer was feeling lonely it would push them to purchase the product and go looking for a partner confidently. So I do think the impact to the viewer will be very positive.
I think my advert is aesthetically pleasing to the eye because of the flow of our shots with the characters. This all in all made our advert look very professional. Another thing that was pleasing to the ye was the bottle. The colour scheme was very nice and people were saying how much they liked it. I think the costume was a good choice and showed what sort of age group we are aiming for very well. I also think the facial expressions are very good on the advert, it shows that they are happy at the end very clearly.
I think our advert effectively sells the product. But at the same time we'd need to have more mature actors to make it perfect; as the target age was 18-25 years old. I think what sells the age group also is the fact they're attracted to each other and you don't really find that with the younger ages. It sells it to the target audience by giving the impression you will find love if you were to wear the fragrance. The fact it's unisex also means that anyone could get lucky. This works because people in the age group of 18-25 nine times out of ten are looking to find a partner and maybe even settle down.
I think the message that came across with this advert is like most the lynx products. This message is that you are sure to find love if you were to purchase this product. It sends this message but with the twist of more class than the other lynx products due to the fact it is a fragrance and not just deodorant spray. The way we showed that you are sure to find love is that they start off just getting ready for a night out somewhere, then the next thing you know they bump into each other and instantly fall for each other due to the fragrance.
Finally I think that the advert in itself looks very professional and edited together very well, no thanks to our partner Alex Thorpe. The only major yet obvious mistake is the sound. Which we are meaning to fix very soon. And we made sure 100% that it met the regulations of showing times. We went over BCAP and made sure that everything was within their regulations.
Personal Reflection
The advert idea was my original idea with the unisex fragrance (inspired by my Tom Ford unisex fragrance). Because of this I had a confident idea in the advert so I made sure i stuck to the storyboards and made it as neat as possible. We even did a quick survey on what colour the bottle would preferably be and in the end ended up being black and silver. Everyone in the class enjoyed the length of the advert due to the fact of it not dragging on but not being so short you don't really understand the product. They thought we could of worked on the continuity in some places for example when we dropped the bottle on the floor. This could of been improved by switching up the shots and making sure it was more clear when and where the bottle fell from. My tutor had the same opinion of what the class did with it with good however it could definitely be improved. Self Evaluation
In the end I personally thought the advert went quite well. I am pleased with it; however, like anything there is always room for improvement.
Primary Research
Primary research is research which is carried out to answer specific questions what you may want to know. To do this you may want to use questionnaires or surveys. What did I do?
What I did for the primary research is a survey for people of the college to fill out. I did this survey on Surveymonkey and I asked them things like 'Who do you think this advert will be made for?' and questions like 'What time would you imagine this advert being on TV?'
We also asked before the advert was made what they thought the colour the bottle should be in the advert. It ended up with being black and silver. Secondary Research
Secondary research is research that makes use of the previous research so that you can make different purposes. We used secondary research to help us figure out what needed improving on our final piece to make it look spot on. What did I do?
We did this by having a gathering in the class and watching the trailer in front of everyone and going back on the negatives they gave us and improving on them. Quantitative Research
Quantitative research is more to do with the numerical/data related research for example statistics or point of views towards something. What did I do? What I did for this is I conducted a survey together for the completed advert, sent it to a few of the members in my class at random and got them to give me feedback on what they thought about the advert. What this did was proposed change to my final piece. The only examples that I could give for this is when we decided to get people to choose what the colour of the fragrance bottle will be and also the survey for the final piece. Qualitative Research
Qualitative research is research that allows an insight into the problems, theories or issue. It almost tries to find out why it's the way it is. What did I do?
What I did was get a focus group and I presented what my brand was in front of them and also said how I was going to re-brand it in my own way. This then gives me a chance to find out what is good/bad about my idea and lets me work upon the crowd's opinions. It's a strong example of my qualitative research due to the fact that it actually really helped towards my final piece. BARB
BARB was created in 1981. It's full name is the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board. It puts together the audience measurements and the TV ratings in the UK. It's main purpose is to find out the viewing figures on UK TV shows. IMDb IMDb is now the world's most popular and authoritative
source for movie and TV content. They offer a database of more than 100 million data items including more than 2
million movies, TV and entertainment programs and more than 4 million
cast and crew members. The IMDb is known worldwide. Media Research Engines (Social Mention) Social Mention is a media research engine that collects user generated content across the universe and simply puts it into one stream of information. It allows you to easily track and find out what people are saying about you as a company, a new product or any topic across the internet. It's also connected to 100+ social media sights such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and even Google. It also sends you E-mails to keep you up to date with everything towards your company. Audience Market Research Audience market research is what it says. Simply Market research towards your chosen audience. This research method is done for one purpose; To make your audience happy. Audience market research is a crucial step in selling a product. This is due to the fact that if the customer doesn't like your product, he/she obviously won't but i. So you need to know what the audience like. We all assume we know what our customers want when in reality we might not have a clue. This can result in a poor investment into something no one will buy. I made sure that with my product that it was what the public would have wanted before I started making further plans with it. For this I had a focus group. I basically said my idea and who it was aimed for and my focus group gave me feedback on whether they thought that would work or not. In conclusion they did; however, if I was to not do that they could of thought it was a bad product and it would of ended up being a complete waste of time. Also I did this with the colour of the bottle. If I didn't ask the public what colour I should make the bottle they may of thought it looked horrible. That would have been a bad selling point as the first reason you see a product is because the look catches your attention and makes you interested. Production Research For production research I had to find out what locations I could use and what would be most suitable. The recce has what all the details on such as the time of use. Secondly I used a location release. A location release is a form where you get the owner of a property to sign. This will allow you to work on a sight legally. And this is what I had to do for every location I had. I also had to do a budget sheet. You get a specific budget for your production and with this money you can purchase your props and costumes etc. I got a budget of £5 for my production and I didn't need to go within my budget at all due to the fact of the college's supplies. Another thing to go on to my production research was the risk assessment. This is a sheet which is covering all the potential dangers within the set. For example if someone had to jump over a table, the risk assessment would try and cover the safest possible way to do that to make sure you don't hurt yourself. Lastly I used a production schedule. This is so that you can manage your time wisely. It also showed us what props were needed where and when. It also showed us the time, date and the weather for the locations.
